Website content does not grow magically overnight

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

So the website owner(s) signed the contract, nods at the design then leaves you for some time. You uploaded the site and when he/she sees it, he/she goes aghast “Why is it blank? Why does it look that way? Where are the pictures? The articles?”

To the web developers: do not forget to indicate in your contract that it is the responsibility of the owners to give you materials for their websites like original or stock photos and articles, unless otherwise stated.

To website owners: we are developers of the site. More often than not, we do not necessarily have all the materials and articles to fill in the blanks of your website. Have a heart or at least consider this analogy: we are carpenters of your online houses, don’t expect us to pick out the curtains and which vase matches the table runner in your kitchen. Therefore, we wait for your content or you could hire somebody to get content and hand it over to us.

It is also important to note that we cannot just grab good-looking photos and nice articles onlinee. They are copyrighted.

Do not expect your site to be complete if all the content you had in mind are not yet handed over to the developers. Consider also the complexity of the job you are asking for–developers have reasons as to why they have time frames like 3 months or several weeks.

Bottom line is, the rapport between the developers and the client is important. If the contents of the website are all ready, the development of the site would relatively be faster.

Photography Class Day 1: whiners

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

It’s my first day to enter Devcom Photography class today. I should have taken that a long time ago before I went shooting brides for a living back in 2005. I was a Com Sci major back then when I started so, go figure. I had to play hookie to go shoot people. I had to make a living anyway–still am.

So my classmates (who are like half a decade younger than I am) stared at me because they thought I already finished this course. It was an evaluation glitch mind you but I don’t care anymore.

I have 18 units right now, 6 more next sem then OJT. It’s NOT easy juggling school and 3 kinds of jobs. So how do I manage? I rant and rave when time permits, read a book one chapter a day, then work till midnight. I wake up at 7 the next day. I work on my webdev projects in between classes. It’s brute force time management.

I know I sound snooty but when my classmates whine about a 300-word article to be passed the next day, I get pissed off. Come on, I write at least 4 500-word articles to be passed the next day–sometimes I beat the deadline, sometimes I don’t. The articles are not all I worry about, I have an average of 3 other projects to finish.

Today, several of them whined about not learning photography because they have NO cameras. I know at least three photographers in the city who cannot afford to buy their own cameras but still managed to be respected people in the world photography that we are in.

Never blame the lack of tools to make up for what you lack. If you lack the initiative, that’s your problem. As Sir Evans said, you can beg, borrow, steal or rent–the steal part is a joke of course. Same goes with Com Sci students who blame their parents for their inability to provide them with high-end computers. I know a lot of people who are good in programming or animation who managed to get away with low end computers.

All they have to worry about is getting a high grade. They got all the time in the world–I wish they could hand over a few hours my way.

I’m getting old. Don’t mind me.
